DUBROVNIK SUMMER FESTIVAL
VISIT OF „THEATRE MASKA I POKRET” FROM SARAJEVO
The guest appearance of the ‘Maska i Pokret Theatre’ from Sarajevo at the very end of the drama program at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival was an interesting and refreshing experience.
It is a pity that the Sarajevans performed in the garden/park of the Centre school, in a space that, no one knows why, does not suit the festival audience and in a space that was not marked in the usual way with the signs about the event.
What we saw from Sarajevans, that is, the theatre whose only members are Iva and Petar Mandić, was the mastery in the animated mask. For many years, these artists have been engaged with mask and movement as their theatrical expression, and the play “Overture for a Requiem” has shown true mastery.
In fact they showed how a mask can be a frame for a certain type, for a certain character, within which a relief character can be achieved through movement and exemplary choreography. The mask is in fact a certain possibility of artistic research and expression, as well as the stage experiment of Iva and Petar Mandić, who are the authors of the scripts, masks, choreography and performers.
These artists know these possibilities well, so they successfully achieve honesty and purity of play and expression in the play without any difficulties. We will also say that it is really a shame that a small part of the festival audience saw this play, and it is also a pity that it was shown only once according to the program.
